It's based on a Victorian-era style of lithography which was used for commercial illustrations and naturalist specimen drawings. The texture pattern helps seamlessly blend only a few colors into the whole color spectrum. It took me a lot of practice to figure out how to recreate this process using hand-drawn digital tools, but I love the result.
